- Description:
- Monsoon United Asian Women of Iowa’s “Unburdening Our Mothers’ Backs Oral History Project” is intended to uncover the shroud of silence cloaking sexual assault among older Asian and Pacific Islander (API) immigrants in Iowa. The project, based on Monsoon’s fundamental principles of feminism and social change, is aimed at providing a therapeutic forum for testimony, collecting stories for the benefit of future generations and augmenting the organization’s efforts to offer services attuned to the experiences and needs of API communities. “Unburdening Our Mothers’ Backs” is just the beginning of the healing process. The project’s targeted API communities are Lao, Tai-dam and Cambodian, but Monsoon expects to inspire members of other communities to tell their stories as the next step. A video showing and booklet discussion of “Unburdening Our Mothers’ Backs” is scheduled for Asian Heritage Month in May:
Sunday, May 6, 1-4 p.m., Iowa City Public Library
Saturday, May 12, , 1-4 p.m., Central Public Library in Des Moines
